Hike

Quick Equipment-free Games

Blind Counting - Everyone sits with their eyes closed. Someone starts with 1 and another person follows with 2, the next with 3 in no prearranged order. How high can you go before two people speak at once?

Shoe Jumping - In a large space, everyone takes off their shoes and they are placed in a long line one step apart. Take it in turns to run down the shoes without standing on one or missing a space. If successful the runner quickly chooses a shoe to move to the end of the line and the next person runs. Gradually the spaces get bigger and the run more difficult. Challenge the group to see how far they can extend the line whilst still runnable.

Spinning Pairs - Guides face each other in pairs. They place their palms against their partners a little above shoulder height. Both partners close their eyes and pull their palms apart (approx. 30cm) while keeping their palms at that height. Both then turn around on their respective spots 3 times at the same time. The goal is to reconnect palms after spinning while keeping your eyes closed.

Sock Wrestling - Sitting in a circle with shoes off, and two or more Guides are called into the circle to try and pull off one of their opponent's socks without losing one of their own.

Orchestra - Guides form a circle sitting down. One leaves the room while a leader is chosen from the remaining players. The leader starts to act out playing an instrument which the others follow, during this the one who has left the room comes in and standing in the middle of the circle is given 3 tries to guess who the leader is.

Have you got some Guides who are ready to start preparing for their Camp or Holiday Permit? You may be in one of these positions:

  1. They've been on plenty of camps and I've taught them everything they need to know for their Camper and Camp Cook Badges.
Wonderful! Either arrange another leader who has camping qualifications to assess them or contact the Outdoor Team to arrange someone. Then start them on planning for doing their Camp Permit at the organised weekends in March and November, or a time and place of their own choosing (remember an assessor needs to be able to visit the site easily).
  2. They don't have enough nights under canvas and/or I'm not sure about teaching them the skills they need for Camper and Camp Cook Badges.
Then send them on the Guide Camp Skills Weekend in October. They will receive all necessary training and be assessed for Camper Badge at the weekend. (They must have at least two nights under canvas and hold their Adventure Outdoors and Fit for Life badges before coming). They can then be assessed for their Camp Cook at the Regional Cookout a few weeks later. You or another leader from your unit might like to come too as it is also a Leaders Standing Camp Certificate Training. After that they can start planning their Permit weekend.
