Risk Management
Have YOU taken the time to think about the RISKS of everyday activities with our girls, in your specific group and environment?
At a recent training, we were asked to focus on situations and problems which may occur and to make every effort to minimise risk. Why not make a list of those things which apply to YOU and YOUR UNIT and GIRLS. Then appraise the likelihood of the risk occurring and the possible impact if it does. Maybe you could put these on a chart or rank them in a priority order. Brainstorm ways to improve safety starting with those items you think have a high risk of occurring and a high impact. It is a good idea to write down your risks and then identify ways to minimise them. Some issues which were considered at the training are below. Add your own to the list.
- Appropriate clothing/shoes
- Hair tied back for activities
- Chewing gum & sweets
- Parents to collect girls
- Outdoor security lights
- Cooking/burns
- Enough adult helpers
- Girls leave hall alone
- Injuries during activities
- Leader taken ill
- Parents late
- Discipline & co-operation
- Phone available
- Hot glue, scissors, knives
- Climbing, running round
- Gas stoves
- Outdoor fire safety
- Fire drill & evacuation
