In 1981 the United Nations General Assembly passed resolution 36/67 declaring an International Day of Peace. In 2001, the United Nations General Assembly adopted a new resolution 55/282 declaring 21 September of each year as the International Day of Peace.

Diwali Festival of Lights - a celebration of Indian culture. Auckland will come alive with the exotic sights, sounds and tastes of Asia 2000's and Auckland City's Diwali festival, India's Festival of Lights.

Diwali (also known as Deepavali) is one of the most important and colourful of the Indian festivals and is celebrated enthusiastically by Indians all over the world. It marks the beginning of the Hindu New Year and is seen as a brand new beginning for all.

Lights, in the form of candles, lamps and lanterns, are a crucial part of Diwali and represent the triumph of light over darkness. They are placed around homes to pray for health, wealth, peace, knowledge and fame.

Diwali is a chance for all Aucklanders and their families to experience a real Indian celebration.
